‘A’ Cricket Teams – what do we look for?

November 17, 2010

NB: Scroll down to see the list of map locations for this week or use this link.

Creating ‘A’ teams in Year 4 and 5 this year has been based on creating a pathway for boys who excel at cricket to then move into our Year 6/7 A Squad. We understand that this can cause anxiety and disappointment for boys and particularly for those boys who just miss out.

The reality is, that cricket teams are made up of 11 on-field players and that it is important to have a team that is fairly stable and that minimises changes. However, we do try to have some flexibility that encourages an increase in performance in the ‘B’ teams.

So, what do we look for? Below, are a series of dot points of skills and attitudes that we look for in an ‘A’ cricket player.

  • correct batting technique: can drive, cut and pull the ball to maximise runs and minimise the risk of being caught
    • stepping to the bounce of the ball
    • keeping a straight bat
    • choosing the correct shot
    • ability to play both sides of the wicket
  • consistent bowling: can bowl the majority of balls with a good line and length
    • keeping the ball on the pitch
    • bowling on the off-side
    • variance in length, pace and position as determined by what the batsman is doing
  • running between wickets: is actively looking for runs
    • understanding of which batsman has the obligation to call
    • concentration – always aware of where the ball is and how far to move out of the crease
    • communication – loud and clear calls
    • willingness to give up the strike to get a bye
  • fielding: focused and active
    • knowing where the ball is at all times and where it may end up
    • continuous movement in the field: walking in, backing up
    • ability to communicate and encourage team mates
    • attacking the ball (rather than waiting for it)
    • understanding of when to throw at the stumps and when not to
  • attitude: is passionate about cricket and enjoys the game
    • focused and concentrating at all times
    • encourages others
    • applauds success
    • respect and good sportsmanship towards opponents and the umpires

Generally, most boys can bat, bowl, catch and throw more than adequately. They can score runs and take wickets even if they use the wrong technique. ‘A’ cricketers need to be more than adequate and use the correct techniques as much as possible. Unfortunately, one or two training sessions and matches a week is not really going to critically impact on the skill level. To make changes that cement the correct technique requires a sustained commitment to one-to-one training. Ask one of our Year 6/7 A Squad players and the majority would tell you that they have had this sort of coaching over 2-3 years and that they did this because they are passionate about the game.

Year 4 Teams (updated 4:30 pm Wednesday)

October 20, 2010

Yr4Teamlist

I recognise that there are more than 12 ‘more able’ cricket players in Year 4, but also that we don’t have the scope to rotate all 37 boys through the A Team.

In order to maximise the opportunities, there will be a core of 7 boys who play in the 4 Saturday matches. Then, we have another 12 boys that we will rotate through the Saturday matches. Most will play 2 matches, but a few will play just one. Boys who aren’t playing on a given Saturday will be placed in a Friday team for that week.
